My hubby is a nerd. That’s kind of what makes me love him so much. Okay, there are a billion things, but I was really drawn to his nerdiness when we started dating. When we were in college he lived in a dorm room suite with three other guys. There were two room and two bathrooms, and where most guys lived two guys to a room, my guys moved all of their beds into one room (and hung blackout shades LOL) and moved all their computers and game consoles to the other room. They were the four biggest nerds I had ever known and I loved them all dearly. Still do. As I was saying… they were big gamers. They taught me the phrase “PWN3D“. I still probably misuse it, but I’ve always loved it. Anyway, my brother texted me after my last post and said “you should coin the phrase ‘coupwn.'” YES. Freaking yes. I love it. So, here we go… from now on, I’m couPWNing!! Here’s what we had this week:
Saturday night at CVS:
I ran out to CVS Saturday night before the ad switch to see if I could snag a couple of last minute deals. I took my (reluctant) mother. She’s never thrilled about going with me. But she left happy this time. :) We did two transactions. I checked out and she checked out separately.
I got the following:
2 packages Halls cough drops. On sale for $1.50. CVS was also giving $1.00 ExtraBucks when you buy 1, limit 1, and I had a coupon for $1.00 off 2.
1 Colgate Max White toothpaste. On sale for $3.00. I had a CVS coupon from the magic coupon machine for $2.50 off one Colgate MaxClean, MaxWhite, or MaxFresh toothpaste, and I had a manufacturer coupon for $0.50 off one Colgate toothpaste
MATH: [($1.50 x 2) – ($1.00)] + [($3.00 – $2.50 – $0.50)] = $1.00 (I paid $2.00 but got $1.00 ExtraBucks) (would have been $6.00, saved 83%)
Mom got the following:
3 Lady Mitchum deodorants. On sale for $1.99 (which is an excellent price, btw) and I had 3 coupons for $1.00 off 1.
Almay foundation (originally $14.99) and Almay eye makeup (originally $8.99). CVS was running a sale for Buy One Get One Half Off, I had two manufacturer coupons for $2.00 off 1 Almay cosmetic item, and I had a CVS coupon from the magic coupon machine for $4.00 off any $12.00 cosmetics purchase. **
MATH: [($1.99 x 3) – ($3.00)] + [($14.99) + ($8.99/2) – ($4.00) – ($4.00)] = $14.45 (would have been $29.95, saved 52%)
**This isn’t a deal I would have gone looking for, but Mom was shopping in the makeup aisle while I was looking elsewhere in the store and was likely going to purchase anyway. I just sweetened the deal with some coupons. The way I see it, she was going to buy the $15 foundation anyway. She essentially got the eye makeup and three deodorants for free. :)
Now for this week:
2 bottles 32 oz. Heinz Ketchup. Originally $2.69. I had 2 Target store coupon for $2.00 off 1. (coupon is still available HERE)
MATH: [($2.69 x 2) – ($2.00 x 2)] + [($2.69 x 3) – ($2.00 x 3)] = $3.45 (would have been $13.45, saved 74%)
Target also has these deals that I haven’t been able to track down yet:
Poise feminine care products. Originally $2.99-$3.49. There’s a manufacturer coupon available for $3.00 off 1, and Target has a coupon available for $1.00 off 1. That makes this free or better, depending on whether your store applies overage to the transaction total or not.
Purina ONE dog food. 3.5 lb bag, originally $6.49. You’ll get a $5.00 Target gift card when you buy three, and if you clip multiple ads you can use three $2.00 off 1 Target coupons from a few weeks ago and there’s a manufacturer coupon available HERE and HERE. If you print three you can combine the coupons for $4.50 off each bag. You’ll pay $5.97 and receive a $5.00 gift card, making them $0.32 per bag.
There was also a deal for Nivea hand cream in the travel section at Target. They’re $1.77 each and there’s a $2.00 off 1 coupon out that doesn’t have a size limit, making them free.
I’m also hoping to score a couple more bottles of ketchup, but my store was all out today.
I also spent almost three hours grocery shopping yesterday.
Things get tricky when two of the three of us are on a strict gluten free diet, we are all trying to eat healthier foods, AND we are on a strict budget. I think we were successful though. I’m not going to spell out everything on these deals (we’re talking almost 60 items and dozens of coupons!) but I will highlight a few good ones for ya!
We live in Topeka, KS, and we go to two stores every week: Our HyVee and one of our many Dillons. Here are the bonuses to each store:
For HyVee, the most recent perk is their Fuel Saver program. If you live near a HyVee, get signed up and start shopping there if you don’t already. This house LOVES HyVee and now we save a fortune on gas as well!! Our store also double coupons on Tuesday and Thursday. They run special bonuses on extra fuel points from time to time as well. I can’t say enough
At Dillons, their biggest perk is double coupons EVERY day. Please note that when I talk about double coupons, these stores both will double the value of a coupon up to $1.00. If you have a coupon for $0.25 off, it will be $0.50. If you have a coupon for $0.50, it will be $1.00. But, if you have a coupon for $0.75, it will also be worth $1.00. The max value for a doubled coupon is $1.00. Dillons also has a gas program, but it isn’t nearly as great as HyVee’s. Dillons gives $0.10 off per gallon after you spend $100.
So, here’s some of the awesome that happened at the grocery store this week:
I got $0.10 in Fuel Points just for buying something there on Monday. My store is also giving $0.12 points when you spend $50 every Tuesday in February.
I purchased 4 boxes of Chex cereal on sale for $2.68, used two coupons for $1.00 off 2, and got $0.02 in Fuel Points for each box.
I purchased Oscar Mayer lunch meat for $2.99 and used two $1.00 coupons. I also got $0.02 in Fuel Points per item.
After a couple other items, I spent $17.10 and got $0.22/gallon off my next fill up. It was all stuff I needed anyway. <3
Tyson Steak Strips were on sale 2 for $5.00. I had 2 coupons for $1.00 off 1, making them $1.50 each. Hubby LOVES these.
Yoplait Greek yogurt was on sale for $1.00. I had a coupon for $0.50 off 2, which doubled to $1.00 off 2, so I got them for $0.50 each… which is less than the store brand regular yogurt this week. :) BONUS: I discovered I like Greek yogurt after all.
Progresso soup was on sale 3 for $5.00, but I had a coupon that doubled to $1.00 off 2. Progresso makes gluten-free soups. WIN!
When I walked in the store they had a huge display of almond bark. You know, the stuff you’re always running to the store after in the middle of December when NO ONE has ANY because EVERYONE ELSE IN TOWN is making candy for their neighbors? Yeah, the stuff that costs more than $4.00 a package? Well, it also keeps for a LONG time. My store must have ordered way too much, because they were getting rid of it for $1.00 a package and it doesn’t expire until the end of 2014. Stocked. Up.
We also got a coupon in the mail for a free Shick Hydro 5 razor. They’re $10.99 regularly. FREE.
I spent $66.10 on (mostly healthy) groceries for the week. I earned 84 fuel points and scored a total savings of $45.70 thanks to store sales and coupons.
I’ve got a couple other trips planned for the week… just waiting for my stores to restock a couple items. What did you score this week? How is couPWNing going for you!?
